how to make a skateboardIf you watched the how a skateboard is made video on this site you saw all the steps involved in making a board but how can you do it at home? You can follow the same steps as in the video but chances are you won’t have all the tools required to do it the same way. So, I am going to lay out a way to make skateboards at home that most anyone can do.

The first thing you will need to have is a mold. This is also the hardest part of the whole process. If you are lucky enough to know someone who has access to a CNC and CAD/CAM software you can have them mill you a mold out of aluminum or a chunk of wood. I am betting most of you don’t know someone like this so we will be taking a different rout.

The fastest easiest way make a mold is to use two existing skateboards. To do this you can take two skateboards that are of the same shape for each side of the mold. You will have to find a way to reinforce the back of the boards so they can be clamped together with out deformation. One way to do this could be building a wood frame that backs the board.

Once you have your mold you can use regular wood glue as your adhesive and door skins as your veneer. It is desirable to use maple veneer but because of the cost and the chance that things may not go right the first time door skins are a great option.

Once you have your mold, glue, and wood all you need to do is clamp it all together. When clamping it is advisable to use wax paper as a mold release especially if the mold you end up using is made of wood.

The clamping power can come from any type of clamp or even a bunch or weights. If the mold you end up using is too large for any clamp or vise you have grab a bunch or cinder blocks and stack them on the mold.

Building skateboards is just a laminating process so if you are really serious about building a board do as much research on laminating and laminating methods. There are some vacuumed pressing procedures out there that would make coping the shape of a board really easy.

If you end up trying any of the above take some photos and send them to use, we will post them for others to see.
